Jake works at his job at the Walpole High School cafeteria.Over the past 9+years, the Buy Nothing Project has grown to over 7,000 groups on the Facebook platform and now we’re also expanding on the independent platform we built just for Buy Nothing participants. When a student reaches the ability to work without the guidance of a job coach, League School works with our community partners or other employers to find the students paid employment opportunities. They navigate typical challenges in the workplace and get invaluable training, to hopefully gain employment in the future. They also learn to work under the guidance of those less familiar to them as our community partners often take on the role of a “supervisor” to these students. In these settings, students are able to put into practice the skills they have learned working at League School. Under the guidance of vocational job coaches, we currently have students who work in over 30 community settings, including: hotels, supermarkets, car washes, office buildings, health clubs, libraries, community non-profits (e.g., Meals on Wheels), restaurants, and animal rescue/training sites. As students take on more work responsibilities working within League School they may have the opportunity for a variety of “paid” jobs at the Hawk’s Nest (our school store), the culinary kitchen, the vocational center, and in other areas around the building.īeginning at age 16, students begin “interning” in community vocational settings.
Starting as young as 12, students begin learning those skills needed to be successful in a work environment such as taking direction from different supervisors, working collaboratively with peers, and communicating in the workplace. The Vocational Department at League School encompasses a wide range of activities, ages, ability levels, and skills. A student works in the Hawk’s Nest school store.
